With school back in session Camrose Police Service, first and foremost, reminds all road users that safety is a number one priority.
An increasing presence of E-scooters has raised some concern, with not only the police, but citizens as well.
The police recognize that many residents may not be aware of the distinction between personal and shared rental E-scooters.
The following rules apply, when it comes to the use of E-scooters.
Personal E-Scooters:
The rules are simple.
In accordance with Alberta Traffic Safety Act, personally-owned electric scooters are classified as prohibited miniature motor vehicles and are illegal to operate on public roads, sidewalks, or pathways.
Shared/Rental E-Scooters:
Commercial rental fleets (shared/rental) are permitted only where specific municipal pilot projects have received formal provincial exemptions under the Traffic Safety Act.
In the case of shared/rental E-Scooters, the following Camrose Bylaws and rules apply.
- Age Limit: Riders must be at least 16 years old.
- Where to Ride: Allowed only on sidewalks and trails; they are strictly not allowed on public roadways.
- Speed Limit: Capped at a maximum speed of 20 km/h (regulated automatically via the rental app).
- Helmets: Wearing a helmet is strongly recommended, though not legally mandated.
- Passenger Limit: Restricted to one person per e-scooter (no joint riding).
- Etiquette and Safety: Riders must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians, use a bell when passing and park upright in designated or safe areas without blocking foot or vehicle traffic
School Property
Students using a shared/rental E-scooter, only (personally-owned E-scooters are not allowed off private property), need to be aware of school rules, which may differ from school to school, but generally may include:
- Not to be ridden when on school property,
- Not to be stored inside the school and
- Highly recommend the use of helmets when ridden (off school property.)
In an effort to educate the public on the use of E-Scooters within Camrose, Camrose Police Service and Camrose Community Peace Officer will be actively interacting with E-scooter users to promote safety, explain the rules and encourage responsible riding, with a goal of education over enforcement.
As well the police will be working closely with Camrose schools to educate parents and students.
By working together and promoting safe, respectful and lawful use of E-Scooters, we can help ensure everyone can enjoy Camrose’s public spaces safely and confidently.
