The Camrose Police Service is providing an update regarding the investigation initiated in June following reports of concerning social media content involving students from a local high school.
Comprehensive investigative steps have been conducted throughout the summer months, including speaking with numerous individuals and their families, reviewing digital evidence, and gathering information from those directly impacted and those involved. Throughout this process, our priority has remained the safety, well-being and dignity of all young people involved. At this point in time, the matter still remains open as there are a few remaining investigative elements to be assessed.
Throughout the investigation, police have remained in contact with impacted individuals and their families. We recognize that those affected may have different perspectives, needs and wishes regarding how they move forward. As a result, we have worked closely with those impacted to understand their concerns and support outcomes that are responsive to their individual circumstances, while respecting their privacy, dignity and well-being.
Significant investigative work, interventions and supports have occurred throughout this process involving affected individuals, families, police, school officials and community partners. While the file remains open and certain aspects continue to be reviewed, our focus remains on supporting those impacted, protecting their privacy and working toward outcomes that promote accountability, healing, and a safe path forward.
In preparation for the start of the school year, the Camrose Police Service has met with Battle River School Division officials and school administrators to help ensure students return to a safe, respectful and supportive learning environment. Appropriate plans and supports are in place should any student feel unsafe or require assistance.
Support continues to be available for students and families affected by this matter. We encourage any student who feels unsafe, targeted, or in need of assistance to speak with a trusted adult, school staff member, counsellor, or police.
The Camrose Police Service is also working collaboratively with educational partners to support initiatives focused on digital citizenship, respectful communication and responsible online behaviour. These efforts are intended to foster positive school communities and help prevent similar situations in the future.
As students prepare to return to school, we ask all members of the community to continue showing respect and compassion for the young people involved. Ongoing speculation, online commentary and the sharing of content related to this matter can cause further harm and may undermine the efforts of those working to heal and move forward.
We recognize the concern this situation has generated within our community and appreciate the patience, understanding, and cooperation shown throughout this process. We thank students, parents, school staff and community members who have supported one another during a difficult time.
Our shared goal remains ensuring that every student can learn, grow, and succeed in a safe, respectful and supportive environment.
To respect the privacy, safety, and healing of the affected individuals, the Camrose Police Service will refrain from releasing additional information at this time. Updates will be shared when appropriate and upon the conclusion of the investigation.
